Stainless steel is almost indestructible under normal wear and tear, and that is why is a popular choice for kitchen sinks and wet bars. It is also the least expensive option. Stainless steel sinks will not chip, nick, crack, rust, stain, or fade.
When shopping for a stainless steel sink, it is important to look for one made from 18 to 20-gauge steel. This number correlates to the ratio of chrome and nickel in the sink. Chrome adds strength to the sink while nickel prevents corrosion. Ideally, you want to purchase a sink with a ratio of 18/10 (18% chrome and 10% nickel). This combination will not rust and will maintain it’s lustrous appearance longer.
It is also important consider the thickness (gauge) of the steel. Sinks made of thicker gauge will stay warmer longer and will be quieter. (FYI: A gauge of 20 is thicker than a gauge of 22.) Less expensive sinks will not have an undercoating and will have a duller finish. These sinks will dent easier.
Higher end models are very polished and are insulated to reduce noise. These sinks may show scratches during the first year of use until all of the scratches blend together.
